Kapas is een prachtig eiland op zo'n 20 kilometer ten zuiden van de stad Kuala Terengganu aan de oostzijde van het schiereiland Maleisie. Het eiland ligt 5 kilometer uit de kust en de vertrekplaats naar het eiland is het dorpje Marang (niet te verwarren met Merang dat in de buurt ligt). Kapas is maar 2 kilometer lang, en 1 kilometer breed. Naast Kapas ligt nog het piepkleine, maar schitterende Gem eiland. Waar het allemaal om draait is wat onder water te zien is. Door de prachtige koralen is het een bijzonder goede plek om te duiken en te snorkelen. Er zijn een aantal kleinschalige resorts op het eiland, waar je voor schappelijke prijzen kunt overnachten. Je komt er om te relaxen, te duiken en te snorkelen. Er zijn geen wegen, en er loopt een jungle-pad over het eiland zodat je ook naar de andere resortjes kunt lopen (leuk voor een korte jungletrip). Verder is het een zo goed als onbewoond eiland. Tijdens de moessonperiode is alle accommodatie op het eiland gesloten, hier kun je in deze periode dan ook niet terecht.

Je hebt een aantal resorts op het eiland, waaronder het Kapas Island Resort, Coral Beach Resort, Qimi Chalet (basic), Makcik Gemok Beach Resort en het populaire Kapas Turtle Valley. De resorts zijn kleinschalig en bestaan meestal uit een hoofdgebouwtje (met lobby en eetruimte) en een aantal er omheen liggende huisjes. De huisjes zijn meestal in traditionele stijl gebouwd. Sommige resorts hebben een slaapzaal en een campeerterrein; wat het eiland ook voor budget-reizigers en backpackers interessant maakt. De meeste bezoekers komen er voor de rust, prachtige stranden en de prima duikcondities. Op het nabij gelegen Gem eiland (Gemia) heb je verder nog het vrij luxe Gem Island Resort. Op Kapas draait het vooral om duiken. Er zijn een paar duikscholen en er zijn ruim 15 duikspots rond het eiland. De condities zijn er goed en omdat het een klein en rustig eiland is, kom je rond de duikspots meestal ook maar weinig andere duikers tegen. Je kunt ook prima rond het eiland snorkelen; in een aantal gevallen zelfs direct vanaf je resort (huisrif).

Om er te komen, vlieg of rij je eerst van Kuala Lumpur naar Kuala Terengganu. Vanaf deze stad neem je de bus of taxi naar het kleine stadje Marang waar de boot naar het eiland vertrekt. Als je vooraf bij een resort boekt, is dit vaak inclusief de boottransfer. De boottocht vanaf Marang naar het eiland duurt zo'n 15 minuten en kost RM25 per persoon. Als je later op de dag pas aankomt, kun je altijd een overnachting bij een van de luxe resorts in de omgeving overwegen. De volgende resorts zijn zeer goed beoordeeld: Ri-Yaz Heritage Marina Resort (in Kuala Terengganu), The Royal Aryani (in Kuala Terengganu) en het Tanjong Jara Resort (in Kuala Dungun). De beste maanden voor een bezoek aan Kapas zijn juni tot en met september. De resorts op het eiland sluiten tussen november en maart de deuren voor toeristen. Tijdens deze periode is er sprake van een heftige moesson, waardoor duiken er zo goed als onmogelijk is. Als je rond de start van de moesson het eiland wilt bezoeken, kun je het beste vooraf mailen of bellen met een van de resorts om na te gaan of ze nog geopend zijn (hetzelfde geldt rond het einde van het regenseizoen).

Op de Nederlandse televisie draait al geruime tijd het programma Ik vertrek. Surrounding the market are some of the best specialty food shops in the country, like the legendary Neal’s Yard Dairy, where everybody who loves cheese gets their cheese. And the English, by the way, make some of the best cheeses in the world.” The Price of London “You should know that it’s extremely expensive here. You get into a cab and it’s basically going to cost you about $30 just to get in. About, what, $7 or $8? Taking a Cab “Something you should know: never take a minicab. Black cabs have the meter so you know how much you’re paying. Plus, not only do they know where they’re going but they know alternate ways to get there. Minicabs, they pretty much charge whatever the hell they like, and the likelihood that they know where they’re going is remote in the extreme.”

The Tube “London’s subway. Older, cleaner, but no more efficient than New York’s. But it still often beats driving, and taxis here are a very expensive proposition.” Riding the Tube “Do use good manners as some citizens of London are likely to take offense at being jostled or disrespected, and would love nothing more than to put the boot into your skull. Also avoid the Tube at all costs during rush hour. It is a [expletive] nightmare.” When to Take the Tube “Travel cards for the day are more expensive in the morning because Londoners don’t want tourists on the subway when they’re rushing to work. It clogs them up. After 9 a.m. they get cheaper.” Navigating the Tube “Everyone will tell you to get an Oyster card, but get a travel card. A day travel card lasts 24 hours and you can go anywhere. But please, move quickly, do not bring a backpack on a rush-hour train. Always stand up for pregnant ladies … whether it was you that put the bun in the oven or not.
