I have a very wide foot - 13 5E. Do you think these would fit? Because the Hydro Tech 2 swim fins have a closed toe end, fit is important for comfort. Fit needs to include consideration of both width and length of foot. You may wish to purchase the Large and XLarge to see which one may fit you better. Also, the rear heal strap can be stretched around 1/2" to reduce foot compression in the toe.To enjoy customized local content, please enter your Zip Code below. Start of LayerEnd of Layer My son and I will be spending 5 days in DC in early August. What's the best way to pay for travel on the Metro?. From the website I see that there are $9 daily passes, the smart card that costs $5 and comes with $25 worth of metro travelling, and $45 weekly passes.
jansport backpack ottawa Is it best to order tickets beforehand or is it easy to buy tickets at any station (for isntance at the Reagan Airport station)?
f-stop kenti photo backpack We'll need 2 trips from and to the airport (we're staying at the DC Convention Center), and I presume we'll do at least 4 Metro trips/day within the usual tourist areas to get to and from sights. Any insights, suggestions and ideas would be appreciated. Take SmarTrip card out of the mix. Try to figure out approx. how much you would spend each day & if it's less than $9/day, get a regular farecard which can be reloaded.

You can purchase when you arrive I was just there with my family last week. The metro and it's fare system were a little confusing at first but once you get the hang of it it's really fast and easy. When we first arrived in DC we bought everyone in our family their own fare card (paper, not plastic). Every day we estimated about how much we were going to need to spend to use the metro for the day. You simply put the card into one of the machines that are at every station and put the amount of money you need back onto the card with either cash or credit. We were going to buy a smart card for everyone but found the paper ticket to work well without paying any additional fees. Be careful with tickets though. If you store them near an ipod or phone this seems to de-activate them. One consolation that escaped notice in the recent round of historical Metro fare increases is that the cost of a SmarTrip card will actually *decrease* from $5 to $2.50 on August 29. When you combine that with the 25¢ surcharge being imposed for using a paper farecard that goes into effect August 1, getting a SmarTrip card may not be such a patently bad idea for a tourist or other temporary visitor.

Even if you don't use the SmarTrip card ten times to make up the cost difference, it's certainly a lot more durable and harder to lose than the paper farecard, and will get you through the faregates quicker. Edited: 8:21 am, July 15, 2010 Where do you purchase the daily pass? You can get the paper tickets or the daily pass from a machine at any metro station. It only takes a minute or two. I think a lot of tourists really get overwhelmed by trying to figure out *exactly* how much money they're going to spend and constantly reload the card for exact amounts. You'll have a much easier time if you just estimate that you'll spend about 2 dollars per one-way trip, and multiply by how many times you plan on using it. I'd personally rather wind up with a little bit of extra money on my fare card than have to stop at the machine EVERY time i take a trip - but that's just me. You can purchase daily passes (and any other Metro fare card) at any Metro station. And Monkeybizness hits it right on the nose--assuming you trust yourself to retain your fare card for the duration of your trip, most tourists are best served by multiplying an estimated number of trips by $2 and adding that much money to a fare card.

Or, if you're here for a longer trip, start with $20 or $25. Then you won't waste time with our visitors filling up your fare card for each trip. Edited: 2:10 pm, July 15, 2010 I was recently in town for six nights and five days, staying north of the zoo and attending a conference plus visiting friends and family. I averaged 4 metro rides a day one way or another and spent just shy of $20. My pass was purchased a couple of days before the June fare increase, so I would budget $25 per person for a typical week and add more if you need to. The fare cards are easy to add money to. I like to wear a little conference badge holder around my neck under my clothes to hold my metro card, a few dollars, etc. They are perfect for keeping the little paper cards safe and secure, otherwise you are digging in pockets, backpacks, etc. Thanks for all the replies. I'm leaning towards the SmarTrip card since it seems convenient. We'll be there 5 days altogether and if we don't use every penny, well it's not the end of the world.

1. How do we know what amount is left on the SmarTrip card? 2. If necessary, is it easy to add amounts to the SmarTrip card? 3. I presume I'll be able to buy the card at airport Metro Station. "1. How do we know what amount is left on the SmarTrip card?" There is a screen on top of the faregate which will briefly flash the amount. You can also check it on the machine which you can use to add additional fares. "2. If necessary, is it easy to add amounts to the SmarTrip card?"Just use the machine. If you see a Metro attendant, he/she can help if you can't figure it out. "3. I presume I'll be able to buy the card at airport Metro Station. I don't believe so. They are not sold from the regular farecard machines. I was there yesterday and don't recall seeing a SmarTrip selling machine. I meant to double check, but didn't. , I don't believe there is one at that station. I hope someone will notice and correct if I've given any incorrect info above.

Edited: 5:17 pm, July 16, 2010 A number of retail outlets (including CVS, which are numerous around the DC area) carry the cards. So assuming there's no way to get one at Reagan National or another station you use, you'll likely find a CVS wherever you're headed to. Specifically near the Convention Center, there's one at 10th & L streets.
