I purchased this as my first high-definition camcorder. I own and I'm familiar with Panasonic's standard-definition camcorder, the AG-DVX100b. This made learning the HPX170 much easier. However, there's still a good learning curve to meet (at least for me). The picture and audio quality is excellent. It uses the P2 cards. The P2 format is stable and is recognizable with my video-editing programs. The downside is that the P2 cards are very expensive.by P2 cameras are for the serious video person.I use 2 of these at work every day. Now I have one at home. The P2 format is useful if you are going to do serious video editing. I wouldn't put one of these cameras on a consumer user's hands. But I sure do recommend them for people who shoot video for money.by far better than the hvx200It's thinner and lighter compared to its predecessor. Better image quality overall because of the ASA rating of 500 compared to the HVX at 320. (for those who don't understand that means the camera is far superior in lowlight conditions).
The colors blow me away too, you can achieve some sick images straight out of the box. here is an example. By adjusting the iris, you can change or close the aperture of the lens, which is expressed as an F value between F1.6 and F11. The volume of the light increases the more that you open the aperture (decreasing F value).
The Volume of light decreases the more that you close the aperture (increasing F value). The current F value appears on the screen.  (For more information on APERTURE check out our ) * The range of focus, an important effect of the aperture, is called Depth Of Field. The depth of field gets shallower as the aperture is opened, and deeper as the aperture is closed. Use the aperture creatively to obtain the desired effect in your outdoor videography. This is handy for making your background blurred or sharp. AGC- Automatic Gain Control You can select a upper limit for the AGC so that during automatic mode, the Gain wont go above a certain dB. You can select [OFF], 21dB (default setting), [15dB], [12dB], [9dB], [6dB], [3dB], and [0dB]. 1) Press the MENU button 2) Select CAMERA SET 4) Set the limit The AX2000 gives you 3 assignable Gain buttons (L,M,H) that you can pick (on manual mode) to set the gain to that while filming.  You can set the values for H, M, and L positions of the GAIN switch.
The default settings of H is 12dB, M is 9dB, and L is 0dB. You can adjust the gain manually when you do not want to use the AGC (automatic gain control). 1) During recording or standby, set the AUTO/MANUAL switch to MANUAL You can manually adjust and fix the shutter speed. You can make a moving subject look still or emphasize the movement of a moving subject by adjusting the shutter speed. 2) Press the SHUTTER SPEED button until the shutter speed value is highlighted 3) Change the shutter speed displayed on the screen by turning the SEL/PUSH EXEC dial. *ALWAYS use a tripod or a camera support system when adjusting shutter speed because it is difficult to focus automatically at a lower shutter speed. Manual focusing with your camcorder attached to a tripod or camera support system is what I recommend. Here is a good blog on "Understanding White Balance" (click to go to blog) You can also buy "White Cards" like this Zeikos one on Amazon for $13 You can also manipulate what the camera "sees" as white for more creative controls.
