And the morning after he dies in a brawl, Christine Entwisle as Juliet's mother comes down to breakfast smoking roll-ups and looking like she's had chemotherapy overnight. Visually, the action is given a Latin, high-Catholic makeover by Tom Scutt, with a set that is part dark Duomo and part London Dungeon. With blasts of fire exploding from the floor, it even has something a Spinal Tap rock concert about it.
Costumes mix hoodies and ruffs to ensure Romeo and Juliet are literally out of time. Yet by the end, the performance starts to reel under its own theatricality. A counter-tenor singing news of Juliet's death is pointlessly camp; the plastic bottle Romeo uses for his poison is frivolous; and the police sirens at his death merit sniggers.
