Byline: Jeff Wright The Register-Guard A man shot his ex-girlfriend four times, killed his best friend, then turned the gun on himself after becoming distraught when his two friends fell in love, police and relatives said Sunday. Dead are Skye Forrest Balkwill, 23, and Lucas Baldwin Gibbons, 22, Kimberly Ann Nixon, a 25-year-old University of Oregon student, was shot twice in the arm, once in the chest and once in the leg and taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center. She was listed Sunday in serious but stable condition, and has been transferred out of the intensive care unit, a nursing supervisor said. The two men attended Edison Elementary, Roosevelt Middle and South Eugene High schools, and over the past two years had become "best friends" after working on a summer construction project together, said Bill Spurling, Balkwill's father. Nixon was apparently shot as she called 911 on her cell phone - moments after Gibbons produced a .22-caliber semiautomatic pistol from

Gibbons first shot Nixon while she sat on a couch, then shot Balkwill, hitting him in the head and upper torso. He then shot himself in the head, police said. Balkwill, a 1999 graduate of South Eugene and International high schools, was an environmental engineering student planning to start his senior year at Oregon State University. His car, with an OSU cap inside, was still at the scene Sunday night. Spurling said his son and Nixon met earlier this summer when he drove her to Portland, where he worked as an intern at LSI Logic, a computer chip factory in Gresham. Spurling said they met through Gibbons, whose relationship with Nixon ended several months ago because of different goals.

In the past six weeks, his son and Nixon "had fallen in love, and Lucas wasn't OK with that," Spurling said. Spurling is a teacher at Shasta Middle School in west Eugene, and his wife, Janet Spurling, recently retired from teaching at EdisonJanet Spurling had her own son in her classroom and also taught math to Gibbons when the two were elementary students, Bill Nixon is an undergraduate studying psychology, according to the UO Gibbons attended culinary arts classes at Lane Community College Linda Strobel, who lives next door to Nixon, said officers carrying assault rifles knocked on her front door and walked through her house and back yard shortly after arriving. The owners of the apartment, who live in the adjoining beige, two-story house, had made several recent improvements to the apartment, and were very selective in choosing a tenant, Strobel said. Though she didn't know Nixon especially well, Strobel said her new neighbor was always friendly.
