After fixing the 906's adjustment correctly for my frame this is very pleasant to carry even with super heavy loads 23...40kg. Goes also for winter use with piles of snow since the pockets have snow covers. A hardcore pack that requires effort to use well, but is rewarding. Savotta is a fairly unknown manufacturer. It makes equipment for the Finnish Defence Force and civilian hikers. Most of the gear is rugged and hardwearing. Being modelled on a similar military version it can withstand very hard use. The harness is highly adjustable, but complicated. Once adjusted well it is a pleasure to carry. The wide belt take most of the load and spreads it so wide that you can't notice it. On my last hike I carried about 15 kg on my hips, nothing on my shoulders and felt nothing. When carrying 30 kgs weight does go on the shoulders, but is distributed quite well.

Definite cons come from its military heritage. It is sturdier and heavier than a civilian might need. The adjustments are good and suit a very wide range of bodies, but are complicated to use. Also the side pockets are a bit too small. I would recommend this pack to anyone who knows that they want an external frame pack that can be dropped from the back of a lorry and dragged over a road before used to carry 40 kg. Unlike larger external framed backpacks, the Border Patrol backpack has an internal pipe frame which reinforces the back of the bag. This rigid and lightweight internal structure allows the backpack to stay upright and comfortable to carry even when filled with heavy loads.

The support frame can also be removed from the backpack, if desired. As a special feature, the Border Patrol backpack has attachment points for a rifle. These are positioned on the outside and can also be used to attach a camera tripod or other long items. The top main compartment (dimensions approximately 45 x 35 x 22 cm) is closed by tightening the drawstring. The opening is then secured with a waterproof protective collar which enables over packing. This opening is covered with a large flap which is secured with straps. The generous length of these straps provides adequate space under the flap for over packing. There is also a tightening strap that encircles the whole backpack. There is a large, open pouch pocket inside the flap. When the flap is closed, the opening of the pocket faces upwards. When tightened and closed the contents will not fall out. Inside the backpack and positioned at the back there is a compartment for the support frame. This compartment is also ideal for carrying, for example, a hydration bladder, SAM splint or other flat items.

The lower compartment of the bag (dimensions approximately 15 x 35 x 20 cm) is closed with a two-way zipper and secured with the same straps used to close the flap of the backpack itself. The side pockets (dimensions approximately 30 x 15 x 6 cm) are closed with waterproof protective collars and covered with flaps that can be secured with straps. The side pocket on the left side also has a vertical zipper through which the contents of the pocket can be accessed quickly. The side pocket on the right side of the pack is tunnelled-shaped and there is an attachment point above it for a detachable strap. This will conveniently hold an axe, for example.
