Indeed, there is a certain joy in clearing a leaf- covered yard with a blower driven by a snarling 27-cc, two-stroke gas engine. The exhaust fumes produced by that blower are another matter; the little engine is a big polluter. That may explain, in part, the rising popularity of yard tools with lithium-ion batteries. The tradeoff seems obvious: Electrics are quieter, cleaner and more environmentally friendly, but gas-powered tools get the job done faster because they're more powerful. We figured the best way to test the gas-≠versus-electric equation was to send two experts into battle–namely, two men charged with grooming a golf resort.
By necessity, both rely on gas-powered tools. But one agreed to take up electric arms for our experiment. A 90-person maintenance crew keeps five golf courses and the rest of the lush property in tiptop shape. All of the crew, including Patterson and Diorio, know a thing or two about using power equipment to keep lawns, hedges and edges neat.
