The Lava Charm is an accessory that grants immunity to lava for 7 seconds. It is found in Chests in the Cavern layer. When the Lava Charm is equipped, a 'Lava' bar appears where the Breath Meter usually is. When the player comes into contact with lava, the meter begins fading, similar to the Breath Meter. Once it empties completely, the player begins taking lava damage. The bar refills when the player emerges from the lava.Intrinsics are properties conferred on the player by worn item (and only stay in effect as long as the corresponding items are equipped) or received permanently from eaten corpse, pool or certain other means. Intrinsics generally provide resistance against certain forms of attack or confer other benefits. A few intrinsics, notably cursing and dooming, are undesirable and are generally removed as soon as possible. Note that the effects of most intrinsics stack — that is, two counts of fire resistance is better than one; two counts of dooming is worse than one.

Also note that items that provide elemental resistances or immunities cannot be destroyed by the corresponding element, even if an item's material usually makes it susceptible to that element (e.g., rings of fire resistances will never burn despite being made of wood). All penetrated damage of respective element is divided by (3*r + R + 1), where r is the amount of resistant items that PC have on and R = 6 if intrinsic is received. Despite the name, elemental immunity internally divides the damage by 10.000 and presumably rounds down. Under most normal circumstances this reduces incoming damage to zero. Intrinsics received as class powers cannot be removed by pools. Hitting a karmic creature in melee downgrades luck-related intrinsics: Note that this effect will only occur on successful hits and not guaranteed to happen 100% of the time. In practice, a special message (Suddenly you think this was a bad idea!) is displayed to indicate that luck intrinsics were downgraded.

It is also possible to block this effect from happening using a ring of karmic absorption. The ring will, however, degrade from each effect blocking, getting uncursed from blessed, cursed from uncursed. Finally, cursed rings will disappear if they are activated to block karmic effect. This book is not for the faint-of-heart. I used this as a textbook for an introductory immunology course, and reading each chapter was quite a difficult, but educational, endeavor. I get the feeling that it was designed to be used more as a reference for physicians and immunologists, and it would be good for that purpose since each chapter can stand alone fairly well (in other words, good for the reader who has already taken a good course in immunology). There is tremendous attention to detail with this book. It is very dense, and although there is repetition from chapter-to-chapter (necessary to bring the full picture together), not a sentence is wasted. The figures are consistent and for the most part, well-done.Immunology is just not an easy subject to present, so I can't fault this book for its presentation of the material. It did just as fine a job of that as I think any book could. I did use a simpler supplemental book to help me understand the subject, which was excellent!! That book is How the Immune System Works, Includes Desktop Edition (Wiley Desktop Editions).

If someone is looking to get a more cursory education of the immune system, I would certainly recommend THAT book, and certainly not THIS book.For what it is though, this is certainly a winner of a textbook.
