At the moment I am managing with a rucksack intended for fishing but I am working in top loader chaos. Does anyone know of any current backpacks that open via the front, made with enough space to fit in my Shen Hao (15in x 15in x 5in or 380mm x 380mm x 130mm when folded flat), a couple of film holders, a lens and board wrapped, focusing cloth, a few filters and a meter? There are some wonderful write ups on the web showing excellent backpacks set up for 8x10 and even larger, but when I look into getting one, each backpack (or the manufacturer) no longer exists... Why do some brands only list external dimensions? Or worse, why do they offer a list of DSLRs and lenses for us to guess the internal size by? Any help will be gratefully received. I have an f.64 BPX pack which fits my 8x10 deardorff and they're currently in stock on the B&H website for us $209.95 plus post I can pull it out and measure the compartments if you want but the 5" you've mentioned should be fine because I had to put a layer of foam in to make the camera fit snug in the pack [but the 6x6 lensboards won't quite fit "end on" in the upper compatrment] comes by default with 2 detachable external pouches that'll take small stuff like light meter, loupe etc or you can take 'em off if you don;t want them also, there's a compartment in the front flap that you could put a film holder or two into for GG protection [but I have a seperate satchel for holders because I want to be able to take a few] Originally posted 51 months ago. easyaction edited this topic 51 months ago. I like the Lowepro Photo Trekker AW. I have both the 1st and 2nd version. The 2nd is a bit lighter and nicer. I generally have my camera, 4 lenses, a filter and my light meter in the bag.

You could definitely fit a couple holders in the front pocket, though I generally carry 6 in another small bag. Thanks, I'll look into both bags. ThinkTank Airport series is a must to look at... I purchased mine at Ikea for about $25. It is one of the best backpack bags for photography I have ever purchased. Not only does it have enough room, with outer compartments for film holders, it also has wheels if you get tired of carrying it. Just do a Google search for Ikea backpacks and you will see a long line they have to choose from. Man, that's a great idea. Just looked on their website and found the Uptacka which has very generous interior dimensions for my old and bulky Eastman No 2D! The Loweprow AW and the f64 are just a tick too small. Update: Yesterday I purchased the IKEA Uptacka backpack for $75 and tested it out last night. It's a tight fit, but I was able to get my folded up wooden 8x10 in the main compartment. Then in the other compartment I put four film holders and the extension rail.

Outside pocket was meter and cable release. Had to use another bag to carry my big Schneider 300mm f5.6 though. Overall, not too bad for the money. Would be nice to have some other outside pockets and a tripod strap, but I'm not going to complain for the money. My wife bought me the f.64 BPX for Christmas. It holds my Deardorf, my lenses, some holders, filters, and light meter easily. And it fits me very well. I haven't been on a long hike with it yet, but wearing it fully loaded felt good. Greg, the f64 is a beauty and I wanted that, but my old wooden folder has some stiff bellows so its about 9" deep. I got a student's backpack at the local Goodwill. It was very well made and padded in the right place, but it just holds my Agfa/Ansco studio camera, light meter, filters and tools. I have to bring another bag along for the film holders, wa lens, and dark cloth -- and the tripod in a third bag!. It makes for a handful of kit, and my neck ends up hurting from the weight of the tripod.

But the backpack is lovely and well balanced, and I am still working on a kit I can hike a few miles with. For me the ideal would be something like the old infantry bag I had as a youth that could suspend all the accessories from one great frame, while keeping a perfect balance for hiking with 40+ pounds. Some great suggestions here. I decided to spend a lot on the biggest Lowepro Trekker and that lets me get everything in and even lets me carry a bit more than I originally planned. So far I limit myself to no more than 10 miles round walk, anything more I use the car. However, after ursbernhard's suggestion I had a look at and fell in love with Think Tank bags too and bought one of their Sling-o-matic 20 bags for my HolgAgon, a couple of 120 folders and all the gubbins to go with them... I have been using it for my F2 Sinar for 3-4 weeks now. it needs some custom padding, but other than that it is ok to carry the body, lens and front standard, one exrta lens on a plate (lenses 240/5.6 nikkor and Fujinon 210/5.6), the rails, 4 holders, light meters the hood etc.
