Eberlestock X-3 LoDrag Backpack + Free Bonus Grey Ghost Gear Legacy Three Day a division of Cirr(x) Group, LLCSummer is the perfect time to start collecting gear for next hunting season, even if you have to hide it from your spouse like I do. While there's so much focus on new bows, rifles, clothing and boots, a quality pack gives you the space to add a few more pieces of essential gear, or meat, while letting you hunt harder by saving your hips and back.
The onXmaps staff have put their packs to the test through pounds of gear, quartered game and miles of the roughest terrain in the West. Below, five staff members share the packs they rely on during the fall and explain what makes these packs worth the price.kelty backpack costco The 2200 was, and still is, Colyer's first legitimate hunting pack. baggu ripstop nylon backpackBefore the 2200 he used a metal pack frame, with a backpack slung over it. targus backpack cvr600He said the pack compresses down small when he's hunting and can expand larger to fit quarters into.zephyr backpack cote
Colyer uses the pack for deer, elk, antelope and bear hunts both with his rifle and bow as the pack will attach both. The features he likes most are the hip belt pockets for stashing his calls and bullets and the meat packing shelf that rolls out of a hidden pocket on the bottom of the pack. samsonite spectrolite 16 laptop backpack reviewWhen it's time to pack out game, Colyer said the 2200 holds its own. icom 703 backpack antennaOne season he had near 80 pounds on his back carrying out a bull elk quarter along with his gear. Colyer admits the pack has some cons, like not being able to fit a tent or sleeping bag for overnight hunts. He also said the straps don't load boned out meat as well as full quarters. onXmaps Founder and President, Eric Siegfried, chose this pack on the recommendation of a family member and he hasn't looked back.
He's had the pack for four years and has put it through the works. It is his go to backcountry, because of how much gear he can get in it and still be comfortable. The Timberline 2 is so comfortable, after establishing a base camp, Siegfried uses it as his primary hunting pack, which saves him the burden of carrying a separate day pack. Siegfried has loaded the pack to nearly 100 pounds with quartered game and, while no pack is considered comfortable at that weight, he said the frame makes for a comfortable pack even weighted down. "Recently I was able to harvest a black bear. I boned-out all the meat and skinned the bear and loaded the pack with everything including that day's gear. I made it down the mountain 4 miles and only thought about lightening the load and coming back a few times towards the end," Siegfried said. Dowson started throwing 3200 on his back in the middle of October, 2015 after several miserable slogs with elk quarters strapped to an inferior day pack. Dowson said what impresses him the most is how light the carbon frame makes the pack, while still keeping it stiff for big loads, making it perfect for day hunts, as well as three day backcountry trips.
He said storing and organizing gear is extremely easy with the inner storage pockets and allows for fast access. One of the best features to Dowson, though, is the 2500 extra cubic inches between the pack and its frame. The bag detaches from the frame making it easy to attach meat, or full quarters, directly to the frame. Dowson said keeping the weight closer to your back makes hiking out easier. He has pushed the pack to an estimated 90 pounds on some hikes. "Not even a week after I got the pack in the mail, I was fortunate enough to find my dad the second biggest buck he has ever put his tag on. We were about 3 miles from the pickup in some pretty steep, rugged country when he pulled the trigger. This was the perfect time to test it out. I put almost the whole quartered mule deer on the pack between the frame and the bag. We made it back to the pickup in one trip and I was very impressed on how well it handled the load." Sandau used this tank of a pack for three years hauling elk, antelope and deer.
The pack really is a tank, which unfortunately reflects its weight as well. Sandau said it's one of the heavier packs on the market. Aside from its weight, this pack is ideal for day hunts and backcountry expeditions. The pack can be condensed to 2,300 cubic inches for day hunts and when you're heading out for the weekend, or it's time to bring game back, the built in cam expansion opens up twice as much space. Multiple pockets help keep your gear organized and Sandau said he appreciated how waterproof and tough the pack is, holding up during a Montana winter with an 80 pound elk quarter strapped to it. "The Just One was the perfect option, especially around the $300 price point," Sandau said. "I was very pleased the first time I loaded down the pack with elk quarters. the load lifters worked well and evenly displaced the weight between my shoulders and hips." Seidel uses this pack for almost all of his hunting needs. Not only can it fit all of his gear for a five day hunt, but also an entire boned out deer, or antelope The specialized shelf also helps keep his meat separate from all his gear.
