Great as a waterproof bike bag or versatile hiking pack!Backcountry Backpack Review 2015 When you are ready to start doing some out of bounds exploration, the first thing you will need is a good backcountry backpack. Backcountry conditions require more equipment than your average day and the right pack will have a place for you to carry everything you need in a way that will be comfortable and functional. In the backcountry you will be hiking, splitting and riding so you need a bag that can do it all and adjust any condition. The bags below made our list because they can do just that. In no particular order, our favorite backcountry backpacks of 2015 are listed below. Burton Splitboard Pack 30L Made specifically for split boarding and navigating through difficult terrain, the Burton Splitboard Pack has every type of compartment and feature that you could possibly need.

This high performance pack was designed to work hard so you can focus on your adventure and not worry about all of your gear. A couple of the most awesome features include straps that allow you to carry your board either split or traditional, a dedicated skins pocket that is self draining to keep the rest of your gear dry and internal shovel and strobe storage. This pack is also hydration compatible so you can use any bladder that you already own and the heavy duty waist strap allows you to take some of the weight off your back for a more stable, comfortable fit when hiking.

The leanest and meanest backcountry backpack that Burton makes is the Burton AK Vario Cover Pack. This lightweight bag is made to zip on to the ABS Avalanche Vario Base Unit (sold separately) to create a storage area for all your backcountry accessories. When deployed, the ABS pack deploys twin airbags with a volume total of 6 cubic feet that could mean the difference between life and death in an avalanche. The ABS bags don’t offer any functionality as far as carrying your skins, shovel, etc., so the Vario Cover is the answer to that problem. Just zip the cover over the ABS pack and you’ve got instant storage that includes vertical board carry, easy access internal shovel and probe storage, hydration compatibility and a waist strap. For the real adventures coming up this winter, be prepared. Burton’s backcountry backpacks will help get you there. If anybody knows backcountry, it’s Jeremy Jones, and he puts just as much effort into designing his Jones Higher 30L Backpack and other packs in the Jones line as he does designing his boards.

For the adventures that require a little more gear, the 30 L pack is small enough to hike with but big enough to carry everything you need for your day on the mountain. Weighing in at just 3.3 lbs this bag weighs almost nothing which is impressive for such a technical pack. Features include vertical board carry, avalanche tool pocket, dual hip pockets and an ergonomic, thermo-molded back panel and shoulder straps for the ultimate in comfort and functionality. For your upcoming hike, trust the name that knows what good backcountry gear really is. Jones 30L R.A.S. Ready Backpack (removable airbag system) When your trip takes you into sketchy territory, be prepared with the Jones 30L R.A.S. Ready Backpack (R.A.S. system and canister are sold separately). When fully loaded, the R.A.S. system only takes up about 4 liters of pack space so you still have plenty of room for all your gear. With all the same features listed above for the basic 30L pack, this suped up version gives you the piece of mind that you will be protected if conditions do turn ugly.

The airbag system is completely removable allowing for everyday riding conditions. Plus, with the R.A.S. system installed the pack still weighs under 4 lbs! Another feature to mention is this pack utilizes compressed air instead of nitrogen so it can be deployed before airplane rides and then you can refill the canister at your destination. If you are going to test Mother nature, it’s best to be prepared. Dakine Pro II 26L With a list of technical features almost as big as the bag itself, the Dakine Pro II 26L Pack is one of the coolest bags on our list. All the basics that you would expect from a backcountry pack like vertical board carry, fleece lined pockets, top and back access entry and a padded waist belt. Then they throw in features like a retractable ski carry, deployable helmet carry (sweet!) and a tool / shovel pocket. Heavy duty ripstop nylon gets the job done while still being super lightweight and an integrated whistle in the sternum strap lets you alert your crew when things get sketchy.

Durable, tough and highly useful, the Dakine Pro II is ready for your next adventure. The Dakine Blade 38L pack is one big, bad, backcountry pack. This massive backpack has room for everything you might need for your next on-snow adventure. Internal room for extra layers, goggle lenses, snacks on the go and so much more. The tech on the outside is where it gets even better. Vertical or horizontal snowboard carry, dedicated A-frame ski carry, a deployable helmet sack, splitboard pole and ice axe carry straps and a snow tool / shovel pocket. Also included are side water bottle pockets, load compression straps and an integrated whistle / sternum strap, just in case. If this pack doesn’t have it, chances are you won’t need it. Pull out the Dakine Blade and get started on your next adventure. This should be a good place to start your research for your next backcountry pack.
