Robin Walker has stated that at one point, Valve team members would refer to Sticky Bombs as "winbombs", due to being perceived as too powerful by the team. Offer is best known for being the pitch man for the ShamWow! and these voice lines are parodied from this commercial. One of the Scout's voice responses for stunning an enemy with The Sandman is 'Ding dong!'. This is a reference to The Crazy Church Guy from Left 4 Dead, who says this while ringing the church bell. Both characters have the same voice actor, Nathan Vetterlein. The Team Captain hat is based off M. Among these voice files are unused Demoman and Soldier lines, generally stating "DOMINATED!", followed by expressions of concern or friendship.It's likely that the original, human versions of these lines were created for the WAR! Update, in which the BLU Soldier and RED Demoman were discovered to have a secret friendship, and the administrator pitted them against each other. The "Unusual" effect, "It's A Secret To Everybody", is a reference to The Legend of Zelda, where the phrase has appeared repeatedly. Due to its close resemblance to the ADAM Harvester from the Bioshock series, Valve requested permission from 2K Games to add the Vita-Saw to the game.

However, due to copyright reason, Valve can't sell the Vita-Saw in the Mann Co. Store. The Natascha's wind up sound file is used by the forklift in Left 4 Dead 2. One of the taunt kills for the Pyro is called "Hadouken". This is a direct reference to Street Fighter. The audio and kill icon further support this, although it's hard to understand the audio, but it does sound like the Pyro is saying "Hadou-Ken!". The bow tie "Dr. Whoa" is a reference to the science fiction series "Doctor Who" and is often associated with the main character 'the Doctor', particularly the 11th incarnation.
